Let us meet our charitable family who crowns their wealth with donations
by Salih İşgören’s own words.
-You are one of the people who come to mind when it comes to “İzmir”. We would like to know you better. Could you please tell us about yourself?
My family came from the Lesbos Island of Greece, and moved to İzmir. We are six siblings. I was born in Izmir. Although I was from a rich family, when I was 6 years old, we started to experience hard days after my father went bankrupt. We sustained our life thanks to the support from our close relatives.
When I started the high school, I went on both studying and working by selling figs in the morning. My teacher’s words encouraged me to deal with business: “You have a head for trade, you should lean to trade.” When I was 16-17 years old, I went to Milas with Uncle Fehmi and marketed products of his fruit gardens to İstanbul. Then, strawberry of Karşıyaka was very famous. We used to sell the strawberry that we purchased from Karşıyaka in İstanbul, the mackerel that we purchased from İstanbul in İzmir.
I started to earn well. I was saving my earnings. Because money is like a bird. If you hold it loose, it flies away; if you tighten it, it dies. It is so hard to turn money into 1000 Liras in trade; but after 1000 Liras, it increases so fast. It is important to keep it as much as to earn it. My current wealth has been acquired by the investments I have made, not by physical work. If the capital is your during investment, it is easier to expand your business.
