Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation, which has carried out many important projects with many public institutions, municipalities, nongovernmental organizations and especially universities, joins forces with Dokuz Eylül University in respect of a new “Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Center” named after the late Nevvar – Salih İşgören couple. To this end, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Ömer Şener, Chairman of the Board Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ökmen, Vice Chairman of the Board Erol Urgun, Supervisory Board President Ünal Ödemiş and Dokuz Eylül University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Füzun and academic members gathered together.
Institute Director Prof. Dr. Mehmet Öztürk informed the foundation representatives about the Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Center, which is being established within İzmir Biomedicine and Genome Institute (İBG – İzmir) in the meeting. Emphasizing that among the important areas of activity of İBG-İzmir is developing modern methods in treatment of diseases, Prof. Öztürk stated in short: “In this context, especially stem cell and gene therapy methods are going to be developed and applied. This technology is very important in treatment of degeneration dependent on senility or disease (regenerative medicine) and treatment of genetic diseases affecting especially children. Therefore, study to establish a Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Center in İBG-İzmir has started.”
Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation Vice Chairman of the Board Erol Urgun pointed out it is pleasing that such technologies which are critical for human health are being developed in İzmir. Urgun said “Considering the areas of activity of İBG-İzmir, we once again understand its importance for our country and all humankind. It is significant that Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation, which have carried out major collaborations in education and health fields, is going to participate in such a big project.” In the meeting, it was decided that a girls’ dormitory named after Nobel-winning Scientist Aziz Sancar is going to be built in the campus of Dokuz Eylül University in Balçova, and an accommodation and social activity center is going to be built for the academicians. After the meeting, where mutual demands were expressed, it was decided to get one again together to shape the project.
